Recently, Life Center Ethiopia organized a life-changing one-and-a-half-day retreat at the Ethiopian Red Cross Training Center, bringing together 61 orphaned children under the empowering theme “You Matter.” The retreat was designed to instill a sense of purpose, resilience, and hope in these young lives who have faced significant hardships. Drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Nehemiah, the event aimed to highlight the importance of self-worth, perseverance, and faith in overcoming adversity.
Pastor Joe McGinn and Jim Leshovsky from our partners, Horizon International and Fellowship City Church, led this transformative retreat. Their teachings, infused with deep biblical insights, emphasized the value of personal resilience and the power of faith to navigate life’s toughest challenges. The children engaged in dynamic discussions, interactive activities, and insightful lessons centered on Nehemiah’s story. Through these activities, they learned that, like Nehemiah, they, too, have the strength and potential to rebuild their lives and create brighter futures despite the odds.

Beyond the educational aspect, the retreat also emphasized emotional and social well-being, fostering a warm and nurturing environment where the children could thrive. The retreat included a variety of group activities, games, and personal reflection periods, all aimed at nurturing a sense of community and belonging. Many of the children formed new friendships, connecting with peers who shared similar life experiences and collectively supporting each other’s growth and healing.
The children were clearly enthusiastic and eager to participate throughout the retreat. They engaged actively in all activities, and their attentiveness showed their genuine desire to learn and apply the lessons to their journeys. Their reactions made it evident that the retreat profoundly impacted their outlook on life.
As the retreat concluded, the children expressed overwhelming gratitude for the experience. Many shared how the retreat had left them with a renewed understanding of their worth and potential. Their words were filled with appreciation for the love and guidance they received, and their hearts were touched by the messages of hope and encouragement that resonated throughout the event.
Loved, Valued and Capable

Mulu, the Founder and Director of Life Center Ethiopia, concluded the retreat with a powerful message of maternal love, offering advice and encouragement that deeply resonated with the children. Mulu’s words emphasized that every child is loved, valued, and capable of achieving great things, regardless of their past or circumstances. Her motherly care and support provided the children with an extra layer of emotional assurance, reinforcing their confidence and self-belief. Mulu noted that the children are the hope of Ethiopia’s future and, like Life Center Ethiopia, believes we are nurturing children who are akin to Nehemiah.
Life Center Ethiopia would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to two wonderful friends of the organization from America, Pastor Joe McGinn and Jim Leshovsky, along with their church community and Horizon International, for their unwavering support and dedication. Their partnership and contributions have been vital in creating life-changing experiences for these children, and their commitment to the cause continues to inspire hope and transformation.
Life Center Ethiopia remains steadfast in its commitment to these children, recognizing the profound importance of not only meeting their physical needs but also nurturing their emotional and spiritual growth. Through ongoing support, Life Center ensures that these children are equipped with essential tools—faith, confidence, and a sense of purpose—to navigate the future and realize their full potential. The organization’s efforts will continue to empower these young hearts, reminding them daily that they are loved, valued, and capable of making a lasting impact in the world.
